The US Route 89 Project began in June 2006 with the goal of publishing a large format photography book, a traveler’s field guide. I frequently travel along the road photographing the most varied and beautiful landscapes in the world. The seven National Parks and thirteen National Monuments on 89 exemplify all of the geographical regions of the West. The southern stretch crosses the Sonoran Desert among the majestic saguaro cactus through broad valleys ringed by mountain ranges. In northern Arizona, highway 89 climbs onto the Colorado Plateau where layer after successive layer of ancient rock is weathered into spectacular canyons, cliffs and buttes. In northern Utah, US Route 89 rises into the Rocky Mountains on its way to the Canadian border on the edge of the Great Plains.
As the project progresses, I am selecting photographs to include in a limited-edtion portfolio for fine art collectors. The image sizes will range from 16x16 inches to 16x20 inches depending on the most appropriate cropping for the photograph. Panoramic images will be printed to 6.67x20 inches. Each print will be mounted and matted to 20x24 inches. Framing or an archival storage box is an available option. At the conclusion of the project, a special Collector’s Edition of the US Route 89 large-format photography book will be produced and each portfolio subscriber will receive one.
