The journey through the Rocky Mountains continues as US Route 89 enters Montpelier Canyon in the Preuss Range, crosses a short valley and enters Salt Canyon. After climbing to Salt River Pass, highway 89 descends to Star Valley. For the next 45 miles, the road travels north through this agricultural valley on the western flank of the Salt River Range.
At the north end of Star Valley, US Route 89 enters the Grand Canyon of the Snake River in the Snake River Range. It emerges into South Park and continues to the town of Jackson.
Special Attractions:
Afton Elkhorn Arch: You can't miss it. Right across US Route 89 in the middle of Afton in the Star Valley is the world's largest elkhorn arch. Built in 1957, it is composed of over 3,000 antlers, is 75 feet long and 18 feet high. While you are standing there admiring the arch, have a drink from the fountain of spring water that originates from North America's only cold water geyser.
Snake River Canyon: Between Alpine and Jackson, US 89 parallels the Snake River. This section of the Snake is famous for great whitewater rafting and kayaking and some of the best fishing in the area. The canyon is the divide between the Snake River and Wyoming Mountain Ranges of the Rockies and one of the most scenic sections of highway 89.
